Lanyon, RN) and escort destroyers HMS Blankney (Lt.Cdr. D.H.R. Bromley, RN) and HMS Brecon (Lt.Cdr. T.D. Herrick, DSC and Bar, RN).
HMS Furious arrived at Greenock around 1700A/6. En-route exercises had been carried out. The destroyers had been detached on entering the Clyde. (4)

During 10/11 May 1943, the aircraft carriers HMS Indomitable (Capt. G. Grantham, CB, DSO, RN, flying the flag of the Flag Officer Carrier Training, Vice Admiral A.L.St.G. Lyster, CB, CVO, DSO, RN), HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN) and HMS Unicorn (Capt. Q.D. Graham, CBE, DSO, RN) conducted exercises in the Irish Sea. In the evening HMS Furious was detached to Belfast Lough. She rejoined the other two carriers the next morning. On completion of the exercises the carriers returned to Greenock late in the evening of the 11th. HMS Unicorn only arrived at Greenock shorty before noon on the 12th having parted company with the other two carriers around 2200B/11. (5)

Operation Croquet.
Operation Croquet consisted of a strike by FAA aircraft against shipping on the Norwegian coast between Bud (62°55'N, 06°55'E) and position 63°20'N, 08°20'E.
The force conducting this operation departed Scapa Flow around 2230B/3 and was made up of the heavy cruiser HMS Berwick (Capt. N.V. Grace, RN, Senior Officer), aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN), escort carrier HMS Searcher (Capt. G.O.C. Davies, RN) and the destroyers HMS Savage (Cdr. M.D.C. Meyrick, DSO, RN), HMS Wakeful (Lt.Cdr. G.D. Pound, DSC, RN), HMS Wizard (Lt.Cdr. D.T. McBarnet, DSC, RN), HMCS Algonquin (Lt.Cdr. D.W. Piers, DSC, RCN), ORP Piorun (Kmdr.ppor. (Cdr.) T. Gorazdowski) and ORP Blyscawica (Kmdr.por. (Cdr.) K.F. Namiesniowski)
The force was to arrive in the flying off position of 5 May but due to unfavourable weather conditions the operation was postponed a day and the force now arrived in the flying off position around 0630B/6. A striking force off Barracudas was flown off from HMS Furious escorted by Wildcats from HMS Searcher. The swept the leads from south to north. Two southbound convoys were found and attacked. A transport of around 2500 tons was claimed to have been sunk and a transport of 6000 tons and a 5000 tons tanker were claimed to have been probably sunk. Also an escort vessel was claimed to have been hit and another transport was near missed. Two Barracudas were lost. The Norwegian (under German control) transport Almora (2433 GRT, built 1905) was sunk and the German tanker Saarburg (7913 GRT, built 1930) was damaged in these attacks.
The force returned to Scapa Flow around 1415B/7, minus HMS Searcher, which had been detached around 1000B/7 to join another force en-route to another raid against the Norwegian coast. (20)

Operation Turbine.
Object of the operation was to maintain a state of alarm on the Norwegian coast and to destroy enemy shipping in the leads by means of an air strike.
The force taking part in this operation was made up of the aircraft carriers HMS Indefatigable (Capt. Q.D. Graham, CBE, DSO, RN, flying the flag of Rear-Admiral R.R. McGrigor, CB, DSO, RN), HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN), heavy cruiser HMS Berwick (Capt. N.V. Grace, RN), light cruiser HMS Jamaica (Capt. J. Hugh-Hallett, DSO, RN) and the destroyers HMS Musketeer (Cdr. R.L. Fisher, OBE, DSC, RN), HMS Marne (Lt.Cdr. P.A.R. Withers, DSO, RN), HMS Meteor (Lt.Cdr. D.J.B. Jewitt, RN), HMS Scourge (Lt.Cdr. G.I.M. Balfour, RN), HMS Caprice (Lt.Cdr. G.W. McKendrick, RN), HMS Nubian (Lt.Cdr. T.A. Pack-Beresford, RN) and HMCS Sioux (A/Lt.Cdr. E.E.G. Boak, RCN).
This force departed Scapa Flow around 2200B/2 for the flying off position off the Norwegian coast. Low clouds however prevented a strike by Barracudas but around 1715B/3, two sweeps could be despatched up the leads between Sogne and Ytteroyane but these were also prevented from entering the leads due to low cloud. They then attacked two wireless stations instead. The force returned to Scapa Flow around 2115B/4. (20)

The aircraft carriers HMS Indefatigable (Capt. Q.D. Graham, CBE, DSO, RN), HMS Formidable (Capt. P. Ruck-Keene, CBE, RN) and HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN) and the escort carriers HMS Trumpeter (A/Capt. K.S. Colquhoun, RN) and HMS Nabob (Cdr. H.N. Lay, OBE, RCN) all conducted flying exercises off Scapa Flow. Destroyers were present but their identity is not known except that HMS Scorpion (Cdr. W.S. Clouston, DSC, RN) was present for sure. (25)

Argles, RN), HMS Cambrian (Lt.Cdr. H.T. Harrel, RN), and the frigates HMS Aylmer (Lt. A.D.P. Campbell, RN), HMS Bickerton (Cdr. D.G.F.W. MacIntyre, DSO and 2 Bars, RN), HMS Bligh (A/Lt.Cdr. J.W. Cooper, RNR), HMS Grindall (Cdr. W. Cole, RD, RNR), HMS Keats (T/A/Lt.Cdr. N.F. Israel, RNR) and HMS Kempthorne (Lt.Cdr. A. Brown, RD, RNR) (26)
18 Sep 1944
Vice-Admiral H.R. Moore, KCB, CVO, DSO, RN, Commander-in-Chief Home Fleet, transferred his flag from HMS Duke of York (Capt. A.D. Nicholl, CBE, DSO, RN) to HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN).
Subsequently, around 1010A/18, HMS Duke of York then left Scapa Flow for Liverpool were she was to be taken in hand refit by the Cammell Laird shipyard. She was escorted until around 0245A/19 by the destroyers HMS Savage (Lt.Cdr. C.W. Malins, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN) and HNoMS Stord (Lt.Cdr. H. Øi).
HMS Duke of York arrived at Liverpool around 1240A/19 when she entered Gladstone Lock.
The destroyers returned to Scapa Flow around 1600A/19. (27)
12 Oct 1944
Around 1130A/12, the aircraft carrier HMS Furious (Capt. G.T. Philip, DSO, DSC, RN) departed Scapa Flow for Greenock where she arrived around 0745A/13. She was no longer fit for operations and was then reduced to reserve and initially used as accommodation ship and later as target ship during shock trials.
She was escorted until around 0430A/13 by the destroyers HMS Zambesi (Lt.Cdr. W. Scott, DSC and Bar, RN) and HMS Caesar (Lt. D.L. Davenport, RN) which parted company near the Mull of Kintyre.
HMS Zambesi returned to Scapa Flow arriving there around 1800A/13. HMS Caesar proceeded to Liverpool arriving there around 1000A/13. (28)
