These boats were designed and built to be large commercial submarines for shipping material to and from locations otherwise denied German surface ships. All surviving boats (7) were converted to U-boat cruisers in 1917.

2 of those were operational as commercial boats, Deutschland (Paul König) and Bremen. Deutschland successfully went on 2 commercial patrols before being commissioned into the Navy on 19 Feb, 1917 as the U 155.

Bremen, launched in 1916, was lost on her first patrol early in 1917 along with entire crew under uncertain circumstances (possibly mined). Number of casualties unknown. She was never part of the German Navy.
