Purpose-built minesweeper. U 80 and U 71 laid mines well east of Montrosse on April 20 and April 27, 1918 respectively. The minefeields were close enough together that the Royal Navy regarded the two separate minelayer runs as one larger minefield.

The sinking was reattributed to U 80 from U 71 in 2023 by Kevin Heath as the location where Blackmorevale sank is much more consistent with U 80’s listed minefield location.
