| Rear Admiral Giovanni Viglione, who was on board as the convoy commodore, ordered all the survivors into the lifeboats, then chose to stay aboard and to go down with the ship. Together with Rear Admiral Ernesto Rubin de Cervin (killed in the explosion of the battleship Benedetto Brin in 1915), he was the highest ranking Italian Navy officer killed in WWI.
