| Convoy OR51 consisting of eight troopships escorted by the U.S. destroyers Porter, Reid, Little, Smith, Jarvis, Cummings and Conner sailed from Brest on the 1st. Later that day, Covington was hit in a torpedo attack by U 86, which was unsuccessfully attacked by Reid, Smith, Little and Porter. Smith rescued the survivors. Covington was taken in tow by the tugs Woonda, Revenger and Concord, escorted by Reid and later Wadsworth, Nicholson and Shaw. However, Covington sank during the afternoon.
