Jürgen Quaet-Faslem joined the Reichsmarine in the late 1920s, but later served as a Luftwaffe pilot before transferring to the U-boat arm.
After U-595 suffered fatal damage in an air attack, Quaet-Faslem beached his boat on the Algerian coast (Niestlé, 1998). Commander and crew got safely ashore, but were turned over to the Americans, who arrived in a small tank convoy to take them prisoner.
Quaet-Faslem arrived at the interrogation centre at Fort Hunt, Virgina on 1 December 1942. He was transferred to the POW camp at Crossville, Tennessee, on 21 December 1942. On 27 January 1944 he arrived at Papago Park POW camp in Arizona.
Escape from Papago Park
On 12 February 1944 he was one of the five U-boat commanders who escaped from Papago Park. Travelling on foot, Quaet-Faslem, Johanssen and Kottmann managed to penetrate 30 miles (48 km) into Mexico before they were recaptured. They were returned to Papago Park on 1 March.
Quaet-Faslem was also one of the 25 POWs who escaped from this camp on the night of 23-24 December 1944. On 6 January 1945 he and his companion Friedrich Guggenberger were captured less than 10 miles (17 km) from the Mexican border.
Quaet-Faslem was transferred to Camp Shanks, New York in February 1946, then to a compound in the British zone of Germany near Münster before being released.
