Jürgen Nissen joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936. From March 1939 to June 1941 he served as a Watch Officer and a Gunnery Officer on the destroyer Karl Galster (Z 20). He went through U-boat training from June to Dec 1941 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Nissen served as a Watch Officer with the 2nd Flotilla from Dec 1941 to July 1942, when he began his U-boat Commander training with the 24th (Training) Flotilla, completed in Sept 1942 (Busch & Röll, 1999).
Nissen commanded the small 'duck' school boat U-146 from Sept to Oct 1942. On 25 Oct 1942 he took over the much larger type IXB U-boat U-105 (Busch & Röll, 1999). He took this boat on two patrols, first to the Caribbean and then to the coast of west Africa (Busch & Röll, 1997). He sank five ships totalling over 24,000 GRT (Rohwer, 1998).
Kptlt. Jürgen Nissen and his entire crew of 53 died when U-105 was sunk on 2 June 1943 near Dakar by depth charges from a one-of-a-kind Potez-CAMS 141 flying boat named Antarés from Flotille d'exploration 4E of the French Naval Air Force (Niestlé, 1998).
