Arved von Muhlendahl was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat U-867 out from Kiel, Germany on 9 Sep 1944. He was almost 40 years old at the time. The boat was sunk with all hands, 60 men, 11 days into the patrol by a British Liberator aircraft (Sqdn. 224/Q) on 19 Sept 1944 (Niestlé, 1998).
