Kapitän zur See Bruno Mahn was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat UD-5 out from Marviken on 30 Aug 1942. He was almost 55 years old when he left for his 75 day patrol, arriving safely in Lorient, France on 12 Nov 1942 having sunk one ship (7,628 GRT).
