Helmut Laubert served aboard the light cruiser Nürnberg before joining the U-boat arm in April 1940. He joined U-125 in Jan 1941 as IIWO (2nd Watch Officer) and was later promoted IWO (1st Watch Officer). He served on her during the Operation Drumbeat mission of Jan 1942.

He was transferred from U-125 six months before she was lost with all hands on 6 May 1943 (Niestlé, 1998). By then Laubert was commanding the famous U-38.

U-38 was retired from active service as a school boat, and following his only command Oblt. Laubert served in the 1.ULD (U-boots Lehrdivision, training division) at Pillau.

Shortly after being promoted Kapitänleutnant in January 1945 Helmut Laubert was assigned to command the new type XXI Elektroboat U-3048, but she was never commissioned (Busch & Röll, 1998).

Kptlt. Laubert was a POW until 10 May 1946.
