Hans-Jürgen Haupt, a former merchant navy officer, left Crew 34 and the Kriegsmarine in 1937, then rejoined it as a reserve officer. That explains his lower rank. He definitely is considered a member of Crew 34 (Rust, 2009).
Hans-Jürgen Haupt took his boat U-665 from Kiel, Germany on 20 Feb 1943 for his first war patrol. The boat was lost 30 days later with its entire crew of 46 men on 22 March, 1943 in the North Atlantic west of Ireland by depth charges from a British Whitley aircraft (Sqdn. 10 OTU/Q) (Niestlé, 1998).
