Hans-Heinrich Haß joined the navy as part of crew 40 and underwent officer and U-boat training from Oct 1940 to March 1942. He trained as a watch officer on the famous U-96 (Lehmann-Willenbrock) from Sept 1941 and stayed with the boat until March 1943, serving as its first watch officer (IWO) from Sept 1942.

He went through further training with the 8th Flotilla from March to April 1943 when he joined the larger U-543 as first watch officer until Feb 1944. There he met his former commander from U-96, Hellriegel, again. From Feb to April 1944 he went through U-boat commander training and in May was assigned to oversee construction of a small type XXIII boat, being given his first command, the U-2324 on 25 July 1944.

Hans-Heinrich Haß was 22 year old, one of the youngest commanders, when he took his small type XXIII boat U-2324 out from Horten, Norway on his first and only operational patrol on 29 Jan 1945. He patrolled off the east coast of England and then returned to Marviken, Norway. He then joined the staff of the 11th Flotilla at Bergen until the end of the war three months later.

Post war

Haß joined the post-war German navy, the Bundesmarine, and on 1 Oct 1957 he took command of the former U-2367, then known as U-Hecht (S 171). That boat, accidentally sunk in May 1945, had been raised in August 1956 and restored. He retired with the rank of Fregattenkapitän.
