Hans Julius Hoß was formerly 2nd and 1st Watch officer abord U 358 from commissioning until 29 Dec 1943. He was relieved from command for medical reasons (nervous breakdown) (Dr. Axel Niestlé). His discharge from the armed forces was formal from 10 March 1945 (WASt).

He went out on 4 war patrols with the U-358 (Kptlt. Rolf Manke) spending 229 days at sea (Busch & Röll, 1999). During his time onboard they sank 4 ships for a total of over 17,000 tons (Rowher, 1998). Hoß left the boat before its 5th and ultimately final patrol. U-358 was lost with all hands on 1 March 1944 in the North Atlantic north of the Azores by British frigates (Niestlé, 1998).
