Wolff transferred to the Luftwaffe at some point in the mid-1930s and commanded the Aufklärungsstaffel See 88 of the Condor Legion in Spain in late 1936 and early 1937. He later transferred back to the Kriegsmarine, where he underwent U-boat training and took U-509 on one patrol. Wolff’s successful Luftwaffe service resulted in his rejoining the navy as effectively with Crew 1926 for promotion purposes.
The 1941 Rangliste lists Wolff as a korvettenkapitän as of October 1, 1940. It’s possible that Wolff achieved the rank of major in the Luftwaffe on that date and his transferred to the Kriegsmarine came later.
