Korvettenkapitän Leo Wolfbauer was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to depart on patrol when he took his boat, the Milch Cow U-463, out from Kiel, Germany on 11 July 1942. He was 47 years old and would command the boat for more than 200 days at sea.
Leo Wolfbauer died with his entire crew of 57 men when his boat, U-463, was sunk 7 days into on its 5th patrol by a British Handley Page aircraft (Sqdn. 58/R) in the Bay of Biscay (Niestlé, 1998).
