U-boat Commands
U-boat | From | To | |
---|---|---|---|
U-62 | Sep, 1941 | 4 Nov 1941 | No war patrols |
U-190 | 24 Sep 1942 | 5 Jul 1944 | 4 patrols (348 days) |
Max Wintermeyer joined the Kriegsmarine as part of Crew 34 in April 1934. He served as the First Watch Officer (IWO) on the U-105, going out on 2 patrols spending over 150 days at sea. From July to Sept 1941 he went through the U-boat commander course at the 24th (Training) Flotilla .
He took command of the small school boat U-62 in Sept, holding the command until 4 Nov. Wintermeyer served as an instructor with the 1st ULD at Neustadt (Pillau) from Nov 1941 to Aug 1942 when he was assigned to oversee construction of a new U-boat (Baubelehrung). He took command of the larger and brand new U-190 on 24 Sept 1942.
With his U-190 he went out on 4 patrols spending almost 350 days at sea - no mean feat especially as his first patrol was in Feb 1943 when things started to go really bad for the U-boat fleet. He left the boat on 5 July 1944 and served in several staff positions until the end of the war.
