Rudolf Singule was a highly-decorated WWI U-boat commander: see his KUK career page.
In 1939 he was recalled to service in the Kriegsmarine as a U-boat instructor in Italy and Kiel. He commanded the school boat
UD-4 (the former Dutch submarine
O 26), part of the
5th (Training) Flotilla at Kiel between 1941-42.
He was killed attempting to protect a woman from drunken Soviet soldiers on a street in Brünn (Brno, Czech Republic) five days before the German surrender.
