From Aug 1943 to April 1944 he went through U-boat training. He then went though U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) from April to Aug 1944 when he took command of the U-889 on the 4th.
On 5 April 1945 Kptlt. Braeucker left for his first patrol with the U-889, heading into Canadian waters. On 13 May 1945 he surrendered his boat to Canada at Shelburne, Nova Scotia. The next day his boat was taken to Halifax, Canada.
After the surrender he was detained, not released until Dec 1948, among the very last U-boat men to be set free.
After the war he joined the newly formed German Navy, Bundesmarine, and later retied as Kapitän zur See a.D.
