Werner Schulte joined the Kriegsmarine in 1931. From March 1938 to April 1940 he served as gunnery and Div. officer on the light cruiser Köningsberg. He then served on the staff of Naval Command at Bergen, Norway until Oct 1940 when he joined the U-boat force.
His U-boat training lasted from Oct 1940 to March 1941 when he began U-boat commander training with the 24th (Training) Flotilla, finishing the course in April. In May Schulte was sent as Commander in Training (Kommandantenschüler) on one patrol on U-98 (Gysae), on which three ships totalling over 23,000 GRT were sunk. In July he was sent for U-boat construction familiarization (Baubelehrung) at Hamburg in preparation for commissioning U-582, which he did on 7 Aug 1941.
On four patrols in U-582, including one in US waters, Schulte sank six ships of almost 39,000 GRT in total.
Kapitänleutnant Werner Schulte died along with his entire crew of 46 men when U-582 was sunk by a American Catalina flying boat on 5 Oct 1942 south-west of Iceland (Niestlé, 1998). After his death he was promoted to Korvettenkapitän with seniority from 1 Oct 1942 (Busch and Röll, 1999).
