Ebe Schnoor was one of the oldest U-boat commanders of WWII to see active service when he took his boat, the milch cow U-460, out from Bordeaux, France on 27 August 1942. He was 47 years old, and would take U-460 on five patrols (over 220 days at sea).

U-460 was sunk 36 days into the 5th patrol by aircraft from the escort carrier USS Card, on 4 Oct 1943. There were only two survivors, and Kptlt. Schnoor was among the 62 who died (Niestlé, 1998).
