In April 1945 Joachim Sauerbier was assigned to take command of U-324, stationed at Bergen, Norway. He boarded U-251 for Norway at Kiel as a passenger (Busch & Röll, 1999). U-251 was sunk on 19 April 1945 by British and Norwegian aircraft in the Kattegat west of Halmstad, Sweden (Niestlé, 1998). Oblt Sauerbier was not one of the four survivors (Busch & Röll, 1999).
