Notes | At 1621 hours, a vessel was sighted at a distance of 17,000 metres. The submarine was in a favourable position and dived at 1717 hours to carry a submerged attack. At 1808 hours, a pair of torpedoes was fired from the stern tubes and both were claimed to have hit after 58 seconds. This was the British Daytonian (6,434 GRT, built 1922) bound for Halifax from Mobile (Alabama). Her survivors reported only one hit and she did not sink immediately. At 1845 hours, Enrico Tazzoli fired 19 rounds at Daytonian, causing further damage. At 1914 hours, the submarine turned away for a stern shot which hit the British ship after 23 seconds and she sank at 1922 hours. One was killed, her fifty-eight survivors landed at Nassau on 15th March. |
