2.Giada (GD, N.88)4 Jun 19422350Cagliari11 Jun 19421035Cagliari1024,7Patrolled in Western Mediterranean near Cape Tenes and Cape Ivi, between 36°40' and 37°00'N, and between 01°00'E and 01°40'E.
10 Jun 19421445At 1445 hours, three Beaufort bombers were seen at a distance of 3,000 metres, flying toward the submarine. Giada dived.

3.Giada (GD, N.88)12 Jun 19421400Cagliari17 Jun 19420955Cagliari546Sailed to intercept an important enemy convoy from Gibraltar 10 miles north of Cape Sigli. Before the area was reached, she was ordered on 13th June to an area between 38°00'N, and 38°20'N, and between 06°40'E and 07°00'E near Cap de Fer. in Grid 9060 near Cape Carbon with Bronzo, Emo, Otaria and Uarsciek. On 14th June, she was ordered to Grid 4001.

37° 55'N, 6° 12'EAt 0432 hours, two destroyers were sighted but disappeared from view as Giada was attempting to close.

At 0440 hours, a number of ships were sighted at a range of 8,000 metres. The aircraft carrier HMS Eagle could be recognised and the submarine steered toward her. At 0448 hours, the submarine made an enemy report. The aircraft carrier HMS Argus could also be seen, but she was showing her stern and could not be attacked.

At 0505 hours, the range had closed to 2,500 metres and the four bow tubes (533mm, S.I. 270 type) were emptied, aimed at Eagle and a cruiser or battleship. This was a surface attack and the submarine submerged as soon as the torpedoes were launched and reached a depth of 134 metres. Two hits were heard after 127 seconds. At 0520 hours, the first depth charges shook the submarine causing some minor leaks. The submarine went on silent running at 80-100 metres with the ASDIC pings quite audible at depths inferior to 90 metres. The submarine was almost continuously depth charged until 1038 hours, counting 272 explosions. It is probable that air attacks on the convoy were interpreted as depth charges. At 1102 hours, thirteen depth charges exploded near the submarine causing more minor damages. Some 70 depth charges were heard from 1755-2030 hours and another 102 between 2100 and 2142 hours, but all these appear to have been distant and caused no further damage.

The target had certainly been HMS Eagle, in company with the battleship HMS Malaya, the aircraft carrier HMS Argus, the light cruisers HMS Kenya, HMS Liverpool and HMS Charybdis and escorting destroyers (operation HARPOON).

It was claimed that British Brown Ranger (3,417 GRT, built 1941) was damaged in this attack but this appears to be groundless.

At 0940 hours, as Giada was coming to periscope depth, she was straddled by bombs, eight falling to starboard and six to the port side. The submarine was again hunted by A/S vessels and they dropped 22 depth-charges during the whole day.

4.Giada (GD, N.88)23 Jun 19420830Cagliari24 Jun 19420715Cagliari250Sailed for patrol near Cap Blanc, between 37°20'N and 37°50'N, and between 10°00'E and 10°20'E, to form a patrol line with Velella, Uarsciek and Malachite but recalled at 2010 hours on 23rd June.
24 Jun 19420400At 0400 hours, the Italian submarine Uarsciek was encountered and exchanged recognition signals.

11 Aug 19420500At 0500 hours, information was received of a convoy of twelve ships escorted by two aircraft carriers, two battleships, two cruisers and fourteen destroyers, steering 090°, 13 knots, 42 miles north of Cape Ferrat. This was the PEDESTAL convoy. Giada moved northward to intercept.

37° 00'N, 0° 20'EAt 0930 hours, Giada had just surfaced when an aircraft was sighted.

At 0934 hours, she submerged and had reached a depth of 9 metres, when two depth charges exploded very close to her hull. Nearly all lights were extinguished and there were a multitude of damages. Giada reached a depth of 70 metres with water entering aft. The ballasts were blown but she continued down when she finally stablised at 140 metres before a quick ascent began.

At 0940 hours, she surfaced. The aircraft, identified as a North American N.A. 40, attempted to strafe the submarine but was inaccurate. Giada could only reply with light arms as the Breda machine-guns could not immediately be brought to the ready. Eventually the deck gun and machine-guns opened fire keeping the aircraft at bay but the enemy managed to hit the hull with machine-gun fire, without causing casualties. At 1110 hours, the aircraft left the scene after a final run.

This was Hudson 'R' (V.9092) of 233 Squadron piloted by Sergeant D.H. Jenkins. The submarine was sighted surfaced and stationary. It was attacked with four Torpex depth charges as it crash-dived. Within 4 minutes the sub re-surfaced, six to ten men appearing on the conning tower. The Hudson strafed and the sub replied with both deck and Lewis (sic, Breda) guns. The aircraft circled for 40 minutes before departing.

37° 26'N, 0° 10'EAt 1345 hours, a Sunderland attacked from the stern and from the sun, flying very low at 30-50 metres, strafing the submarine and dropping four bombs, the nearest falling about 30 metres from the starboard side. Giada replied with her gun and machine-guns. The aircraft came for a second run, without dropping any bomb but, she strafed the submarine, peppering the bridge with several rounds, causing several casualties. One of the submarine gunners was killed, three were seriously wounded and six slightly wounded (including T.V. Gaspare Cavallina). The aircraft was hit and released a bomb about 1,000 metres away, possibly to gain height, but was observed to crash about 3,000 metres away. The submarine took refuge in Valencia and later returned to her base.

This was actually Hudson 'C' of 233 Squadron, sent as a follow-up to the attack by aircraft 'R' of the same squadron which had attacked the submarine earlier in the day. It had detected the submarine by radar at 25 miles and sighted it when the range had dropped to 6 miles. The submarine was on course 360° at 9 knots. and the aircraft made a first run, dropping a Torpex Mark VIII depth charge set at 25 feet from a height of 70 feet. It was observed to explode on the starboard side of the submarine. The aircraft strafed the submarine and claimed the killing of one man on deck. In return, the starboard wing was holed by the submarine's antiaircraft fire. During a second run, a depth charge was released from a height of 30 feet and exploded under the submarine' bows. The aircraft was hit in the port engine which was seriously damaged and had to set course for base. It did not crash at sea as reported.

The destroyer HMS Wolverine was sent to investigate.

36° 58'N, 5° 43'EAt 1950 hours, a large dark shadow and two destroyers were sighted, steering 270° at 13 knots.

At 1957 hours, the four bow tubes (533mm, S.I.C. type) were fired at a range of 1,100 metres, aimed at the large target described as a liner of the ORCADES class. Giada then submerged and was at a depth of 9 metres, when an explosion was heard after 57 seconds, followed 4 seconds later by another one. At 2002 hours, an explosion similar to a torpedo was heard and three minutes later another explosion believed to be from a boiler. The submarine went down to 50 metres but was not depth-charged.

Despite the claim, the result of the attack were not confirmed.
