29 Oct 1940 | 0839 | 37° 50'N, 21° 05'E | At 0839 hours, Atropo was laying a minefield from 37°50'50" N, 21°05'20" E to 37°50'50" N, 21°04' 30" E (off Zante) when the premature explosions of two mines interrupted the mission. This was minefield J 6 A N and three groups of eight mines and two groups of six mines of the T.800 type were to be laid for a total of 36 mines. Only 16 mines were laid before the accident occurred. The accident was viewed with great concern and it was suspected that the submarine Foca, who had failed to return from a similar mission, may have been victim of a similar accident. The Italian High Command decided to cancel future minelaying missions and the submarines of this class would be used in transport missions instead. No offensive minelaying missions would be carried out by Italian submarines for the remainder of the war. Just before the Armistice, Atropo was scheduled to lay an experimental defensive minefield. It is not certain if this was ever carried out as relevant documents are lost. | |||||||
