7 May 1944
HMCS Giffard (T/A/Lt.Cdr. C. Petersen, RCNR) picks up 43 survivors from HMCS Valleyfield that was torpedoed and sunk about 50 miles south of Cape Race, Newfoundland in position 46°03'N, 52°24'W by German U-boat U-548. 5 of the survivors later died of exposure.

HMS Upright (Lt. J.A.L. Wilkinson, RN) conducted A/S exercises off Bermuda with HMCS Giffard (T/Lt. G.H. Matheson, RCNR) and HMCS Morden (T/Lt. F.R. Spidler, RCNVR). (1)
