Decommissioned 25 June 1945. After the war this ship was converted into a cargo ship named Balboa. In 1946 it was purchased by the Mossad Le Aliya bet (Translation: the Institute for Immigration B. (not to be confused with the Mossad Le Modi in Ve Tafkidim Meyuhadim known more as the Mossad, Israel's Secret Intelligence Service) this was the Jewish Underground organization which helped Holocaust surviving Jews to immigrate to British controlled Palestine, soon to become Israel in 1948. Since the British did not allow immigration to Israel in substational numbers, the Jews had to resort to “illegal” methods: smuggling new immigrants in small ships to Israel (then Palestine). This system was called Ma’apilim movement (Ma’apilim means climbers to higher places). After this short lesson in Israeli History (…) the ship was called “Hagana” (Defence), and it sailed to Palestine in the end of July 1946 from Yugoslavia. It was caught by HMS Venus several days later, boarded and brought to Haifa, were it’s occupants were interned in Palestine. After the Declaration of Israel’s Independence, it was converted to be Corvette named “Hagana”, and served during Israel’s war of Independence until the Middle 1950’.
