20 Apr 1944
Around 1515Q/20, the aircraft carrier HMS Indomitable (Capt. J.A.S. Eccles, RN) departed Norfolk, Virginia for Rosyth.
Around 2000Q/20, on leaving Chesapeake Bay, she was joined by the frigates HMS Riou (Cdr. C.H. Campbell, DSC, RN), HMS Inman (Lt.Cdr. P.S. Evans, RN), HMS Hotham (A/Lt.Cdr. S. Ayles, RNR) and HMS Holmes (Lt. D.B.G. Dumas, RN).
Around 1030O/24, HMS Riou parted company due to flooding in two compartments due to a defective fire main.
Around 2015N/26, HMS Riou rejoined after having effected repairs.
Around 1610N/27, HMS Riou and HMS Inman were detached to Horta, Azores to fuel. They rejoined around 2345N/27. On these two frigates rejoining, HMS Hotham and HMS Holmes parted company to refuel at Horta, Azores. They rejoined around 0730N/28.
Around 1300N/27, HMS Inman was detached as she was unable to keep up due to engine trouble
Around 1215B/1, the remaining escort was detached in position 55°36'N, 09°20'W. HMS Indomitable then proceeded, unescorted, at high speed through the Hebrides and she arrived at Rosyth around 1015B/2. On arrival D/G trials were carried out. (1)

Operation Mascot.
Object of the operation was to cripple the German battleship Tirpitz in the Kaa Fiord by bombing attacks.
Ships taking part in the operation were the battleship HMS Duke of York (Capt. G.H.E. Russell, CBE, DSO, RN, flying the flag of Vice-Admiral H.R. On the 17th, 45 Barracuda bombers and 50 fighters took off from the carriers but they were detected early and on arriving in the target area thick smoke obscured the target and bombing was consequently ineffective. A destroyer was attacked and claimed to have been damaged by a single Barracuda and a tanker and gun positions were also attacked. Fighters also attacked secondary targets. According to German sources, besides Tirpitz the destroyers Z 29, Z 31, Z 33, Z 34 and Z 38 were present. Z 33 was damaged by own AA gunfire and Z 29 and Z 34 suffered some minor splinter damage.
A second strike was cancelled owing to thick fog.
One Corsair fighter made a forced landing.
The Force returned to Scapa Flow on the 19th.
On the 14th, before sailing, Rear-Admiral R.R. McGrigor, CB, DSO, RN, had transferred his flag from HMS Devonshire to HMS Formidable. On return to Scapa Flow the flag was transferred back. (3)

HMS Malaya (Capt. J. Hughes-Hallett, DSO, RN) departed the Clyde area for Plymouth. She was escorted by HMS Escapade (Lt.Cdr. H.R.A. Kidston, RN), HMS Inman (T/A/Lt.Cdr. H.E. Petre, RNR) and HMS Knaresborough Castle (T/A/Lt.Cdr. J.F. Marchant, RNR).
At 0215/3, the escort was reinforced by HMS Geranium (T/Lt. C. Blackshaw, RNVR).
At 1220/3, HMS Geranium was detached.
At 1315/3, 'Force 26' joined the escort, it was made up of HMS Faulknor (Cdr. Douglas Eric Holland-Martin, DSO, DSC and Bar, RN), HMS Bulldog (?), HMCS Iroquois (Capt. K.F. Adams, RCN) and HMCS Haida (A/Lt.Cdr. R.P. Welland, DSC, RCN).
HMS Malaya arrived at Plymouth around 0830/4. (6)

Around 1000A/3, HMS Truant (Lt.Cdr. R.S. Brookes, DSO, DSC, RN) departed Portsmouth for Barrow-in-Furness. She was escorted by HMS Kingston Turquoise (A/Ch.Skr. J. Flett, RNR).
Around 0615A/4, north-west of the Godrevy Lighthouse, HMS Inman (T/A/Lt.Cdr. H.E. Petre, RNR) took over the escort duties. (7)
6 Mar 1945
The light aircraft carrier HMS Venerable (Capt. W.A. Dallmeyer, DSO, RN, flying the flag of Rear-Admiral R.J.H. Harcourt, CB, CBE, RN) and escort carrier HMS Trouncer (Capt. B.J. Fisher, DSO, RN) proceeded from Greenock to Belfast. They were escorted by the destroyer HMS Escapade (Lt.Cdr. H.R.A. Kidston, RN) and the frigate HMS Inman (T/A/Lt.Cdr. H.E. Petre, RNR).
At Belfast HMS Trouncer was to be taken in hand for conversion to assault carrier flagship at the Harland & Wolff shipyard. Conversion was completed in late August 1945 but by then the Second World War had ended. (8)

Neame, DSO and Bar, RN) and HMS Colossus (Capt. G.H. Stokes,CB, DSC, RN) departed the Clyde for Malta. They were escorted by the destroyers HMS Tartar (Capt. B. Jones, DSO and Bar, DSC, RN), HMS Ulysses (Lt.Cdr. B.G.B. Bordes, DSC, RN), HMCS Assiniboine (Cdr.(Retd.) E.L. Armstrong, RCN) and the frigates HMS Cotton (Lt.Cdr. I.W.T. Beloe, RN), HMS Inman (T/A/Lt.Cdr. H.E. Petre, RNR) and HMS Stockham (T/A/Lt.Cdr. B.C. Hamilton, RNR).
Around 0830A/15, HMS Cotton, HMS Inman and HMS Stockham parted company.
Around 1130A/15, the escort destroyer HMS Croome (A/Lt.Cdr. B.C. Ward, DSC, RN) joined company.
Around 1300A/16, the destroyers HMS Malcolm (Cdr. H. Lloyd-Williams, DSO, RNVR), HMS Verity (Lt.Cdr. C.G. Cowley, RN) and HMS Wolverine (A/Lt.Cdr. A.J.M. Miller, DSC, RNVR) joined company.
Around 1330A/17, the light aircraft carriers anchored in Gibraltar Bay.
Around 1500A/17, the light aircraft carriers weighed anchor to continue their passage to Malta. They were now escorted by HMS Ulysses. To the east of Gibraltar RDF exercises were carried out with the destroyer HMS Barfleur (Cdr. M.S. Townsend, DSO, DSC and Bar, OBE, RN).
Around 2215A/17, HMS Tartar rejoined company apparently having been delayed at Gibraltar.
Around 1000A/20, the fleet arrived at Malta. (11)
24 Mar 1945
HMS Glory (Capt. A.W. Buzzard, DSO, OBE, RN) proceeded from Bangor to the Clyde. En-route several trials were carried out, including full power trials. She was escorted by HMS Walker (Lt. T.W. Lancaster, DSC, RN) and the frigate HMS Inman (T/A/Lt.Cdr. H.E. Petre, RNR).
HMS Glory arrived at Greenock later the same day. (12)
