At 15.14 hours on 25 June 1944 the German submarine U-984 fired a Gnat torpedo at the ships of the 5th Escort Group and hit HMS Goodson (A/Lt.Cdr. Jack Winston Cooper, RNR (retired)) in the stern. She was towed to Portland by HMS Bligh and declared a total loss.
