History

Transferred to Soviet Navy on 10 April 1944, commissioned on 26 June 1944 as V-1 (Cyrillic B-1).

V-1 (Capt. 2nd Class Israel Fisanovich) was bombed in error by a Coastal Command Liberator (86 Sqn RAF/V) about 220 nautical miles north of the Shetland Islands, during passage from Dundee to Polyarnoe at 06:10Z on 27 July 1944. All 51 crew members, including one British liaison petty officer, were lost.

For a long time the official story was that V-1 had left the assigned transfer corridor and dived when the aircraft came in sight instead of staying on the surface and firing recognition signals as instructed. However, the documents of the enquiries carried out by the Admiralty and the RAF about this incident show that it was actually the crew of the Liberator who was at fault - they were out of position and did not properly identify their target before attacking despite being warned about the presence of Allied submarines in their patrol area.
