History

At 00.24 hours on 15 Sepember 1940 the German submarine U-48 attacked the convoy SC-3 west of Ireland and missed the British steam merchant Empire Soldier, which had been slightly damaged in a collision some time before. At 00.25, U-48 torpedoed and sank the only escort of this convoy, HMS Dundee (Capt. Oliver Maurice Fitz-Gerald Stokes, RN (retired)) in position 56º45'N, 14º14'W.

4 Feb 1940
HMAS Perth (Capt. H.B. Farncomb, RAN) departed Aruba and shifted patrol to the Curacao area where rendezvous was made with HMS Dundee (Capt. C.C.A. Allen, RN) and information was exchanged.

Later on the day, HMAS Perth set course to return to Aruba. (1)

8 Feb 1940
HMAS Perth (Capt. H.B. Farncomb, RAN) and HMS Dundee (Capt. C.C.A. Allen, RN) are order to remain on patrol near Curacao as information had been received that the German merchant vessels Seattle (7369 GRT, built 1928) and Vancouver (8269 GRT, built 1930) were expected to leave within the next week.

HMS Penzance (Cdr. A.J. Wavish, RN) was also ordered to the Curacao area as was the French armed merchant cruiser Barfleur. The RFA tanker War Brahmin (5545 GRT, built 1921) was ordered to proceed to the Bonaire area so as to be in position to fuel the ships on patrol if needed. (1)

14 Feb 1940
HMS Dundee (Capt. C.C.A. Allen, RN) tried to fuel off Bonaire, Dutch West Indies from the RFA tanker War Brahmin (5545 GRT, built 1921) but was unable to do so due to the bad weather conditions. (1)

3 Jul 1940
HMS Diomede (Capt. J.W. Farquhar, RN) arrived at Kingston, Jamaica from patrol.

After fuelling she departed for Bonaire, Netherlands West Indies escorting the merchant vessel Jamaica Producer (British, 5464 GRT, built 1934) there to pick up German pow's (for merchant ship crews).

Soon after departure she was ordered to proceed to Martinique instead.

The escort the pow's the sloop HMS Dundee (Capt.(Retd.) O.M.F. Stokes, RN) was ordered to proceed from Trinidad to Bonaire and take the place of the light cruiser. (2)

13 Jul 1940
HrMs O 15 (Lt. H.M.L.F.E. van Oostrom Soede, RNN) ended her refit at Curacao. She departed for Bermuda the same day. She made the passage together with the British sloop HMS Dundee (Capt.(Retd.) O.M.F. Stokes, RN).

O 15 was to proceed to Halifax, Canada. There she was to join a convoy for onward passage to the U.K. where she was to join the 9th Submarine Flotilla based at Dundee.

22 Jul 1940
HMS Dundee (Capt.(Retd.) O.M.F. Stokes, RN) is docked in the floating dock (AFD 1) at Bermuda. (3)
