1 Jun 1944
HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN) attacked but missed 'a destroyer' that was part of the escort of a convoy.
ULTRA had informed that an important convoy had sailed from Piraeus for Heraklion. These were the German transports Sabine (2281 GRT, built 1921), Tanais (1545 GRT, built 1907) and Gertrud (1960 GRT, built 1930) escorted by the torpedo-boats TA 19, TA 14, TA 16 and TA 17, the auxiliary submarine chasers UJ 2101, UJ 2105, UJ 2110 and the motor minesweepers R 211 and R 34.
In the afternoon, the convoy was under heavy air attack, Sabine being sunk, TA 16 heavily damaged and Gertrud set afire.
Vox apparently sighted Gertrud (although she may have mistaken her for a UJ-boat) towed by TA 19 and escorted by TA 17 and TA 14. She attacked a torpedo-boat, perhaps TA 14, and was hunted by UJ 2142. The latter had been sailed from Heraklion in company with GK 62, to carry out an A/S search near Dia Island and then reinforce the escort of Gertrud. The A/S hunt was inconclusive, UJ 2142 did not realise that she had actually slightly damaged HMS Vox.
(All times are zone -2) 2158 hours - In position 340° degrees, Standia Island, 4 nautical miles, sighted four ships bearing 180° on a westerly course. Range was about 10000 yards.
2159 hours - Altered course towards to intercept.
2202 hours - The enemy was seen to alter course towards.
2205 hours - The enemy fired starshell towards HMS Vox. Burst short. Two ships were seen, thought to be UJ-boats. THe other two vessels could no longer be seen. The enemy was seen to start closing Vox, while zig-zagging.
2207 hours - Dived in position 35°30'N, 25°13'E. Commenced attack on the leading UJ-boat.
2231 hours - Sighted a destroyer bearing Red 90°, range 2000 yards. Broke off the attack on the UJ-boat and shifted target to the destroyer.
2236 hours - Fired four torpedoes at the destroyer thought to be San Martino (TA 17). Missed.
2250 hours - The enemy was hunting and was now in contact.
2319 hours - Three depth charges were dropped fairly close causing some minor damage.
0030/2 hours - The enemy lost contact. Six more depth charges were dopped but the were far off.

1001 hours - Heard a sharp explosion assumed to be a torpedo hit.
1006 - 1015 hours - A total of six depth charges were dropped but they were not very close.
1110 hours - At periscope depth. Commenced to return to the scene of the attack as Anita was apparently beached.
1230 hours - Heard a distant explosion.
1234 hours - A loud sharp explosion. On putting up the periscope a bomb splash was observed closeby. Also an R-boat was seen coming towards. Went deep. The R-boat passed close down the starboard side but did not drop any depth charges.
1302 hours - A schooner dropped a pattern of twelve depth charges. These were notheavy depth charges and were set too shallow. This was fortunate as they were right on top of HMS Vox.
1359 hours- Returned to periscope depth. The schooner and motor minesweepers were still hunting for the attacker. Withdrew to seaward and decided to come back at a later time.
[Anita sank later the same day after an attempt to tow her off failed. Part of the cargo had been salvaged before she sank.] (10)

3 Aug 1944
HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN) fires two torpedoes at the German guard boat GK 61/Pétrel VIII south of Santorini Island, Greece. The torpedoes both missed their target. GK 61 was escorting a convoy of three caiques, these were ARG 79 / Thetis, SAM 83 / Theologos, SAM 137 / Agios Georgios.
(All times are zone -2) 1930 hours - On closing Santorini Island sighted an R-boat and three large caiques (thought to be of 120 to 150 tons) leaving the harbour. Commenced attack. 4 Aug 1944
HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN) torpedoed and sank the German guard boat GK 61/Pétrel VIII (75 tons) and the sailing vessels ARG 79 / Thetis, and SAM 83 / Theologos north of Iraklion, Crete in position 35°52'N, 25°15'E.
(All times are zone -2) 0010 hours - Sighted the convoy ahead at a range of six nautical miles.
0020 hours - Dived and commenced attack.
0159 hours - Fired three torpedoes at the R-boat from 500 yards. She was hit and blew up in position 35°44'N, 25°11'E.
0203 hours - Surfaced for gun action against the schooners. Within half a minute of surfacing Vox was caught in a heavy cross fire. She had turned stern on and most of the shells bounced off the bridge and casing but two of the gun crew were wounded by splinters. One shell came into the bridge, three more penetrated the lower bridge plating and the casing. Another shell cut through the forward jumping wire preventer. The enemy ammunition was self destructing at a range of 2500 yards.
At 3000 yards turned to a parallel course and opened fire. The gun trainer had difficulty to see the target. By the time a hit was observed on the first caique the other two had scattered. Fire was ceased and HMS Vox gave chase to the caique that went at full speed towards Candia. Closed to 2000 yards and opened fire which he did not return. After 10 hits the caique was well ablaze and after another 6 hits he was seen to be sinking.
0310 hours - Vox was now 10 nautical miles north of Standia Island. Made a quick search but did not find the other two caiques. Went to a position 3 miles north of Standia Island to cut them off on their route towards Candia.
0505 hours - Sighted a caique 10 miles to the north sailing southwards. Presumably this was the caique we had hit before and his engine was out of action. Closed at speed to 3000 yards and then turned to a parallel course.
0548 hours - Opened fire on the caique. Fire soon broke out forward after the fifth round. The range was then closed.
0600 hours - The target capsized. Went alongside the wreckage and carefully punctured eight drums of diesel fuel with small arms fire while taking care not to hit the five German survivors in the water.
0620 hours - Gun action completed, we had only 9 rounds of HE left. Set course to 360° to get clear of the land. (10)
10 Aug 1944
HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN) attacked the German patrol vessel GK 06 escorting three caiques (including the German Seeräuber) from Santorini to Heraklion. No hits were obtained. The three torpedoes were sighted and avoided. Shortly after, the convoy came under attack by a Beaufighter but escaped damage.
At 0504 hours, HMS Vox, which had trailed the convoy, attacked it again, this time with her 3" gun but GK 06 replied with her 7.6 cm gun and the submarine, which almost ran out of ammunition, was forced to submerge.
(All times are zone -2) 1915/9 hours - Sighted two vessels in Santorini habour. Manoeuvered to place Vox close to their expected track when they were to leave. When they left they were lost out of sight in the dusk. When they were seen again they had turned to 180° close in shore to Cape Akrotirion and were down the light of Vox. Torpedoes could have been fired in this poor light from 1000 yards but LT. Michell thought it better to attack later by moonlight.
2039/9 hours - Surfaced and closed the enemy from astern.
2140/9 hours - In visual touch, proceeded to work ahead. It was necessary to loose sight of the enemy now in anticipation of moonrise.
2346/9 hours - Dived. Estimated Vox was 7 nautical miles ahead of the enemy.
0017 hours - Picked up HE bearing 330°. Crossed the enemy's bow at full speed. In doing so sighted the enemy bearing 035°, range 1500 yards.
0100 hours - In position 35°45'N, 25°20'E fired three torpedoes at the convoy. Missed. The convoy was seen to consist of one escort, thought to be a former Italian RD class minesweeper, a coaster or large barge and two armed caiques.
0120 hours - Surfaced. With no torpedoes and only 9 rounds of HE remaining there was no chance of doing damage to the convoy. Decided to try to panic the enemy into scattering the convoy or leaving the slowest vessel behind. Proceeded to overtake the convoy in visual distance. The escort opened fire twice with Oerlikon and came towards but gave up and returned to the convoy when Vox turned away at full speed.
0519 hours - Dived. The escort made no attempt to start a hunt. (10)

0142 hours - Target bearing 130°, range 4600 yards.
0147 hours - Target now bearing 110°, range 3400 yards.
0154 hours- Target still bearing 110°, range now 3100 yards.
0201 hours - Vox turned to starboard to fire. Sighted by the enemy who turned away.
0213 hours - Exchanged shots with the enemy. He was obviuosly better fitted for night action so broke off the action after three rounds had been fired and sent the gun crew below.
0222 hours- Lost sight of the enemy but kept to the north and west of him by A/S and radar. Hoped to hold the enemy there till dawn.
0358 hours - The enemy came almost directly towards Vox from right ahead.
0359 hours - In position 35°23'N, 25°24'E commenced firing a full salvo of torpedoes from 1400 yards. The first torpedo detonated prematurely when 500 yards from Vox. The others missed. The enemy opened fire on this. The fourth torpedo was not fired at this time.
0400 hours - Quickly made a new setup and fired the fourth torpedo. It also missed.
0401 hours - Vox turned away with a hail of tracer flying over her. Dived to avoid this gunfire. Could see nothing through the periscope so went deep.
The enemy made a short attempt to hunt the submarine but soon set course for Candia.
--------------------------------------------------------------
1115 hours - Sighted a caique bearing 324°, range 6 nautical miles.
1127 hours - Surfaced to close this caique and to sink it with gunfire.
1131 hours - Opened fire from 5600 yards. Fired six rounds for one hit.
1135 hours - A shore battery opened fire but the shells fell about two miles short.
1147 hours - Fired eight rounds into the caique from only 200 yards. The target then sank in position 35°29'N, 25°11'E. Four men and one women were seen to row away in a small boat. Punctured 14 floating oil drums. Retired to the north-west. (10)
1 Sep 1944
HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN) attacked an escorted KT ship with four torpedoes off the north coast of Crete in position 35°26'N, 24°57'E. No hits were obtained.
This was Kriegstransportschiff Erpel (834 GRT, built 1944, former KT 26). Erpel could only do 7 knots due to engine defects and escorted by TA 18 (with starboard engine defects). They were on passage from Piraeus to Suda but then diverted to Heraklion. Erpel managed to avoid the first torpedo and observed shortly after two more torpedo wakes. All three torpedoes were seen exploding on the rocky shore of Crete.
Note: The two EMS boats seen were probably GK-boats sailed from Suda to reinforce the escort.
(All times are zone -2) 1600 hours - Sighted smoke ahead.
1609 hours - Sighted the convoy we had been warned about. There were four ships. Proceeded inshore at speed.
1616 hours - Identified the ships as one KT ship with three escorts, one destroyers and two EMS craft. These last two were on the seaward side of the KT ship. Commenced attack.
1638 hours - In position 35°26'N, 24°57'E fired four torpedoes at a KT ship from 1300 yards. Missed. Went deep on firing as there had been quite a bubble on firing the torpedoes and Vox also rose to 22 feet on firing and might have been spotted.
1648 hours - One depth charge only was dropped.
1750 hours - Returned to periscope depth. Nothing in sight. It had been intended to return to periscope depth much earlier but the ballast pump was defective. (10)
2 Sep 1944
At 1904 hours (zone -2), HMS Vox (Lt. J.M. Michell, RN), surfaced in position 6.6 nautical miles, 236°, Mikronisi light (Mirabello Bay). Ran into Poro Bay but sight nothing. Set course towards St. Nikolo Island. Air raid sirens could be heard. A Very light was then fired from a nearby house in the town and rifle shots followed from the same house. Fired two shells into the house and the front of it came down. A twin Oerlikon then opened fire from further away. Set course to clear the area. Shortly afterwards two guns, thought to be 88mm, also opened fire on Vox which dived at 2046 hours. (10)
6 Sep 1944
