HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) heavily damaged the large Greek sailing vessel PI 07 / Doxa (504 GRT) with gunfire north of Suda Bay, Crete, Greece. The wreck of Doxa was later towed to Suda Bay where it arrived on August 4th.

(All times are zone -2)
0058 hours - Radar reported a contact bearing 070°, range 4000 yards.

0104 hours - Sighted a vessel bearing 130°, range 2400 yards. It was at first thought to be an escort vessel but was soon seen to be a caique. Decided to sink her with gunfire.

0120 hours - Opened fire with starshell but it only burnt for 20 seconds. Intended to fire more starshell but the shells twice jammed and had to be rammed out.

0131 hours - Opened fire with H.E.D.A. shells from 2100 yards. The target was lost from sight after three rounds had been fired which had all missed. Closed the range aided by radar. Fired eleven more rounds for eight hits. The target stopped and the crew abandoned ship. The caique was large, about 120 tons. Boarding was not possible due to the swell. When close it was seen that the caique was armed and then at least ten men were still on board. Some were seen to be German. Retired up to windward and fired twenty-four rounds for fourteen hits.

0255 hours - By now the caique was abandoned, on fire and sinking in position 35°49'N, 24°15'E. Retired to the north-east. (7)

3 Sep 1944
HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) claims the sinking of one and possibly two sailing vessels north of Candia, Crete, Greece.

German sources confirm the caique Fink / PIR 011 of 100 tons being sunk. Two other caiques were in this convoy (identity cont known to us for the moment). They were escorted by the patrol boat GA 70. Following the sinking the patrol-boats GK 92 and GK 93 were immediately ordered to carry out an A/S search off Heraklion but did not find the submarine.

(All times are zone -2)
0555 hours - Sighted a convoy of four large caiques escorted by an R-boat steering 155° at 6 knots in position 35°27'N, 25°05'E. One caique was about a mile ahead of the other three who were bunched close together. The escort was close to these caiques. Started attack on these last three caiques.

0619 hours - Fired three torpedoes from 2500 yards. The results could not be observed but three explosions were heard 2m 15sec, 2m 34sec and 2m 36 sec after firing. Retired to the northward at speed.

0645 hours - Returned to periscope depth. Sighted two caiques and possibly a third, they were five to six miles away to the south. Thought to have sunk one caique, possibly even two. Continued to retire from the area. (7)

24 Sep 1944
HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) sinks the Greek sailing vessel Maria / VOL 78 with gunfire south-east of Cape Drepano, Sithonia Peninsula, Greece.

(All times are zone -1)
2037 hours - Sighted an object to the southward and gave chase.

2100 hours - Identified the object as a large caique with two masts. Course of the caique was approximately 100°.

2122 hours - In position 39°30'N, 24°06'E opened fire with the deck gun from 800 yards. Fired four rounds and obtained two hits. The caique stopped and the crew abandoned ship. Picked up two old men and a boy. They did not speak English. Gain no information due to this except that they were en route from Salonika to Khios. Decided to board the caique however just as the boarding party was about to get in the boat the caique suddenly sank. The second hit had been in the hull aft. The caique must have filled up slowly until she sank. (7)

26 Sep 1944
HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) torpedoed and sank the German transport Salomea (former Greek, 751 BRT, built 1897) 2 nautical miles south-east of Cape Paliouri, Greece.

Salonea was in convoy with the caiques Syros 578 and Syros 596 and escorted by the patrol boats GN 91 and GN 70.

Salomea was sunk without survivors. It appears likely that Vigorous in the darkness did not spot the two smaller caiques.

(All times are zone -1)
2252 hours - Sighted a ship clear of Cape Drepano, making smoke. Identified it as a three-island type cargo steamer of about 1000 GRT escorted by two small craft. Enemy course was 260°, speed 6.5 knots. Started attack.

2320 hours - Fired four torpedoes from 1000 yards range. 50 seconds later the target blew up with an enormous and brilliant explosion. As Vigorous was showered by debris, Lt. Oglo quickly dived and retired to the north. About two minutes after the explosion breaking up noises were heard. No counter attack followed so altered course to retire to the south-east. (7)

27 Sep 1944
HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) torpedoed and sank the German landing craft SF 299. SF 121 was damaged during the same attack.

The other German F lighters in the convoy were the SF 171, SF 265, SF 296 and SF 298. The escort was the I O 109.

(All times are zone -1)
2040 hours - Sighted seven small vessels south of Cape Drepano.

2120 hours - Identified them as six F lighters (landing barges) and one E/R boat as escort. Circled round and closed them on the surface from the port quarter.

2200 hours - In position 39°51'N, 24°12'E fired two torpedoes from 1500 yards at two overlapping F lighters. Enemy course was 100°, speed 7 knots. One hit was observed. Retired at speed to the north and gradually circled round to the east to try to get into position for another shot.

2204 hours - The landing barge that had been hit did not sink. It was thought that most likely her stern had been blown off as the superstructure aft could no longer be seen. Only a low hulk was seen which was almost awash. The remaining craft were seen to be 'milling around'. The escort looked like to be picking up survivors.

2205 hours - Three of the F lighters made off to the west at their best speed.

2220 hours - The two remaining F lighters made off after the first three. The escort appeared to be still looking for and picking up survivors.

2229 hours - Turned to follow the F lighters. By that time they were already about three miles off so it took some time to catch up.

2249 hours - Came under fire from the enemy, Vigorous must have been sighted.

2257 hours - As enemy gunfire became more and more accurate turned away boot soon turned back to the westward.

2308 hours - The escort again sighted Vigorous and took her under fire soon joined by two of the F lighters. Again Vigorous had to turn away.

2320 hours - Turned to the westward again. Could not approach the enemy due to the light conditions so only followed. Shortly after midnight the enemy was seen to disappear up the Gulf of Kassandra. Did not follow. (7)

29 Sep 1944
HMS Vigorous (Lt. J.C. Ogle, DSC, RN) attacked a large barge with two torpedoes south of the Kassandra peninsula. No hits were obtained.

(All times are zone -1)
0703 hours - Sighted a motor vessel and an escort bearing 270°. Range was about 9 nautical miles.

0719 hours - Sighted two more ships to the south-west. The first ships sighted were now identified as the motor vessel Adriana with one corvette as escort. Enemy course was about 005°, range was now 6 nautical miles.

0730 hours - Dived an ran in at 5 knots but could not get within range of the Adriana so transferred our attention to the other ships. These turned out to be a barge escorted by an UJ boat. The barge was of similar outline to the 'Este-class' but seemed to to be half as long. She was heavily laden with a deck cargo and was possibly carrying troops as well as a number of figures were seen on deck. Two more escorts were also in the area. Enemy course was 005°, speed 6 knots.

0807 hours - The enemy had altered course to 350°.

0819 hours - In position 39°53'N, 23°18'E fired two torpedoes at the barge from 3500 yards. Went deep on firing and retired to the southward. 5m 17sec after firing an explosion was heard giving a torpedo running range of 8200 yards. Up until then two escorts had been heard to use Asdics but after the explosion ony one was heard transmitting. It is however not thought that this could have been a hit on the enemy.

0837 hours - Depth charging commenced. Until 0850 hours seven depth charges were dropped, all distant. Until 0835 hours HE and Asdic impulses were heard.

0950 hours - Came to periscope depth. Nothing in sight. (7)
