19 Dec 1943
HMS Satyr (Lt. T.S. Weston, RN) attacked but missed the Norwegian merchant Roald Jarl (1404 GRT, built 1913, offsite link) with 5 torpedoes South-West of Alesund, Norway in position 62°14'7"N, 05°10'6"E.

(All times are zone -1)
1015 hours - Sighted a small merchant vessel escorted by a trawler coming up Venelv Gabet. Started attack. Visibility through the high power periscope was practically nil due to rainstorm and strong wind.

1025 hours - Sighted another small merchant ship similarly escorted and approximately two miles astern of the first.

1037 hours - Sighted a medium seized merchant vessel of about 6000 to 7000 tons escorted by an M-class minesweeper also coming North from Venelv Gabet and again about 2 miles astern of the second ship. All escorts were on the starboard beams of their repective ships. Started attack on the third ship.

1054 hours - In position 62°14'7"N, 05°10'6"E fired 5 torpedoes from a range of 2800 yards. Upon firing Satyr went to 80 feet and retired at high speed.

1056 hours - Heard a heavy underwater explosion. HE of the target ceased.

1058 hours - Heard breaking up noises.

1059 hours - Heard 3 distant underwater explosions. These must be other torpedoes exploding on hitting the shore.

1114 hours - Returned to periscope depth.

1115 hours - A counter attack of 7 depth charges followed. All were close. Went to 90 feet.

1125 hours - Satyr began to gain depth as she was taking on board water through a small leak through the drain pipe from the stern torpedo tube.

1146 hours - Satyr bottomed at 362 feet. The water was pouring in at great pressure. All machinery was stopped.

1150 hours - Heard several depth charges explode but they were some distance off.

1215 hours - HE of the escort was again heard but it then faded to the Southward.

1254 hours - Tried to bring Satyr to a depth where the inflow of water would be reduced but depth control was lost.

1257 hours - Broke surface. A twin engined aircraft was een through the periscope coming towards firing 4 guns. Hits were heard outside. Dived again.

1258 hours - Passed periscope depth. Steadied off at 150 feet with the pump running continuously. It was very difficult to keep depth control and at 1414 hours Satyr again grounded at 235 feet.

1450 hours - As Satyr was bumping on what appeared to be a rocky bottom main ballast was blown to attempt to get into trim again. Satyr however took an angle of 30 degrees bow up and nothing could be done from stopping her to break surface again.

1455 hours - Broke surface for about 30 seconds. Water inside the boat meanwhile had caused damage in the engine room and to the W/T set. Satyr quickly dived again and now got into trim. She retired from the area and given the damage to her the patrol was abandoned and course was set towards Lerwick. (5)

5 Feb 1944
HMS Satyr (Lt. T.S. Weston, RN) torpedoed the wreck off the German merchant Emsland (5180 GRT, built 1901) that was aground off Stadlandet, Norway after being heavily damaged by British torpedo bombers on 20 January 1944. On 11 February the wreck was hit yet again by aerial torpedoes.

(All times are zone -1)
1558 hours - In position 62°13'1"N, 05°03'E sighted a medium seized merchant vessel in the bay North of Buholmen light. The vessel was seen to be a freighter of about 5000 tons and appeared to be at anchor. Started attack.

1610 hours - In position 62°11'8"N, 05°03'9"E fired a torpedo from 3200 yards. The torpedo was seen to run straight for the target but nothing happended.

1615 hours - Fired a second torpedo but this one was seen to break surface and alter course about 20° to starboard.

1616 hours - Fired a third torpedo. However Satyr jawed on firing so the torpedo was seen to run for the stern of the ship instead of amidships. But again nothing happened

1620 hours - Fired a fourth torpedo. Again the torpedo was seen to run for the middle of the target and this one finally hit. The result could not be observed further as Satyr had to change course otherwise she would have hit bottom. (5)

10 Feb 1944
HMS Satyr (Lt. T.S. Weston, RN) attacked an escorted merchant vessel with 5 torpedoes off Standtlandet. Two hits were claimed but this was not the case.

(All times are zone -1)
0828 hours - In position 62°17'7"N, 05°12'E sighted a merchant vessel of approximately 2500 tons escorted by a trawler about 1 mile ahead. Another trawler was coming up astern. Started attack.

0841 hours - In position 62°16'9"N, 05°14'E fired a salvo of 5 torpedoes from 5400 yards. Two explosions were heard 4 mins. 22 secs and 4 mins. 33 secs after firing. HE of the target ceased after the first explosion. 6 Minutes after firing a torpedo was heard to explode on the beach.

0842 hours - Went to 60 feet and altered course.

0855 hours - Nothing in sight except for one trawler just disappearing round Sandoy. (5)

11 Feb 1944
HMS Satyr (Lt. T.S. Weston, RN) attacks an escorted tanker with 3 torpedoes off Stadlandet. No hits were obtained.

(All times are zone -1)
0904 hours - In position 62°15'9"N, 05°09'5"E sighted a merchant ship of approximately 1500 tons escorted by an armed trawler coming Southwards. They were keeping well inshore. Started attack. Satyr turned to port and ran in at high speed. When Lt. Weston had another look through the periscope a 2500 tons tanker was spotted with a torpedo boat ahead and a trawler astern. Target was now shifted to the tanker.

0919 hours - In position 62°15'2"N, 05°09'5"E fired a salvo of the 3 remaining torpedoes from 4000 yards. After firing went to 80 feet, altered course and withdrew at high speed for 4 minutes. No explosions were heard at all. No counter attack followed. While Satyr retired from the scene at 80 feet an enemy convoy was heard to pass overhead. This convoy had unfortunately not been sighted due to the bad visibility. (5)

12 Feb 1944
HMS Satyr (Lt. T.S. Weston, RN) attacked the beached German merchant Emsland (5180 GRT, built 1901) again. The last remaining torpedo was fired from the stern tube but it did not hit the target.

(All times are zone -1)
1225 hours - Sighted the merchant ship again that we had attacked on the 5th. She was beached. Decided to fire the stern torpedo at her. Commenced closing.

1325 hours - In position 62°11'3"N, 05°05'2"E fired the stern torpedo from 2800 yards. The torpedo however hit the bottom before it reached the target. (5)
