History | laid down as Servia, launched as Carinthia Displacement: 20277 BRT Career: At 13.13 hours on 6 June 1940 HMS Carinthia (Capt. J.F.B. Barrett, RN) on Northern Patrol was torpedoed by the German submarine U-46 west of Galway Bay, Ireland in position 53º13'N, 10º40'W. HMS Kipling (Cdr. A. St. Clair-Ford, RN) and HMS Westminster (Lt.Cdr. A.A.C. Ouvry, RN) escorted the armed merchant cruiser HMS Carinthia (Capt.(Retd.) J.F.B. Barrett, RN) during her gunnery exercises off Portland.
In the afternoon the destroyers carried out gunnery exercises themselves. (1)
