In August 1939 the passenger ship Carinthia of the Cunard White Star Ltd, Liverpool was requisitioned by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser. Conversion was completed on 30 December 1939.

January 40 - April 40: Northern Patrol
May 40 - June 40: North Atlantic Escort Force

At 13.13 hours on 6 June 1940 HMS Carinthia (Capt. J.F.B. Barrett, RN) on Northern Patrol was torpedoed by the German submarine U-46 west of Galway Bay, Ireland in position 53º13'N, 10º40'W. The vessel remained afloat, but foundered during the next day about 34 miles west of Bloody Foreland. Two officers and two ratings died in the attack.

HMS Kipling (Cdr. A. St. Clair-Ford, RN) and HMS Westminster (Lt.Cdr. A.A.C. Ouvry, RN) escorted the armed merchant cruiser HMS Carinthia (Capt.(Retd.) J.F.B. Barrett, RN) during her gunnery exercises off Portland.

In the afternoon the destroyers carried out gunnery exercises themselves. (1)
