USS Grampus (Lt.Cdr. John Richard Craig, USN) was lost under mysterious circumstances, possibly sunk by the Japanese destroyers Minegumo and Murasame (both offsite links) on this date. The sister sub Grayback (SS-208) reported seeing her in the area. The two Japanese destroyers were lost with their logs.

USS Grampus (Lt.Cdr. J.R. Craig) lands Australian coast watchers on the coast of Vella Lavella.

18 Oct 1942
USS Grampus (Lt.Cdr. J.R. Craig) fires four torpedoes at the Japanese light cruiser Yura (offsite link) off Choiseul Island in position 07°47'S, 157°19'E. One torpedo hit the Japanese cruiser but it fails to explode.
