USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. Joseph Harris Willingham) leaves Pearl Harbor for her first war patrol, and was to patrol off the Marshall Islands.

4 Feb 1942
USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. J. H. Willingham) returns to Pearl Harbor after conducting her first war patrol. She was sent to the Mare Island Navy yard for a refit.

9 Apr 1942
Her refit completed, USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. J. H. Willingham) leaves the Mare Island Navy Yard and heads for Pearl Harbor.

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. J. H. Willingham) leaves Pearl Harbor for her second war patrol. Once again she was ordered to patrol in the Marshall Islands area. Shortly after arriving in her assigned patrol area she was ordered to patrol off Truk to intercept ships returning from the Battle of the Coral Sea.

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. J. H. Willingham) torpedoed and damaged the Japanese merchant ship Sanko Maru (5461 GRT) south-west of Truk in position 07°00'N, 151°00'E.

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr. J. H. Willingham) torpedoed and sank the Japanese merchant ship Shoka Maru (4467 GRT, built 1935) about 385 nautical miles south-west of Ulithi, Caroline Islands in position 04°07'N, 143°32'E.

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr W.B. Sieglaff) leaves Fremantle for her fifth war patrol. She is to patrol in the Java Sea.

In the early afternoon HrMs Van Galen (Lt.Cdr. F.T. Burghard, RNethN) conducted A/S exercises off Fremantle with USS Tautog (T/Cdr. W.B. Sieglaff, USN).

On completion of the exercises USS Tautog proceeded on patrol while HrMs Van Galen set course to make rendezvous with the transport Alcoa Polaris (American, 6679 GRT, built 1942).

HrMs Van Galen failed to make rendezvous with the transport and returned to Fremantle around 0900I/17. (1)

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr W.B. Sieglaff) torpedoed and damaged the Japanese light cruiser Natori (offsite link) 18 nautical miles south-east off Ambon in position 04°07'S, 128°32'E.

USS Tautog (Lt.Cdr W.B. Sieglaff) torpedoed and sank the Japanese passenger ship Hasshu Maru (1873 GRT) five miles east of Salier Strait, off the southern tip of Celebes in position 05°40'S, 120°30'E.
