History	USS Peary (Lt.Cdr. John Michael Bermingham, USN) was sunk by Japanese carrier aircraft off Darwin, Australia in position 12º30'S, 130º50'E, 93 of her crew were lost and 49 were rescued by swimming or boat though 12 were rescued by the Southern Maid. The commanding officer was amongst those killed.
