History | Cargo (ref.) vessel completed in January 1921. Requisitioned by the Admiralty in September 1940. Displacement: 6833 GRT. Dimensions: 129.9 x 16.5. Armament: 2 6" guns (2x1), 1 12pdr AA gun, 4 .303" MG AA (4x1) Speed: 14 knots. At 2258 hours on 23 February 1941, U-107 fired two coups de grâce that missed because the ship suddenly continued. Also a stern torpedo fired at 2342 hours missed because it was a surface-runner. The U-boat began a long chase of the zigzagging ship and fired two torpedoes at 0758 hours on 24 February. One of them hit in the stern and caused the ship to sink in 58°55'N, 20°50'W. HMS Churchill was ordered to search for survivors, but found none. The commander, 18 officers and 122 ratings were lost. |
