USS Frank E. Evans (Cdr. Albert Sydney Mclemore, USN) was cut into two after a collision in the South China Sea with the HMAS Melbourne. Melbourne was steaming in company with destroyers of DesRon 23. The Evans was hit between the stacks while maneuvering into plane guard formation. Unfortunately, she cut right across the bow of Melbourne. This collision resulted in 74 of her crew being killed.
