The USS Norman Scott was damaged seriously by Japanese shore batteries off the southern coast of Tinian, during the invasion of Tinian on July 24, 1944. The Norman Scott was detailed to draw fire away from the invasion that was taken place north of the island. The Norman Scott was hit six times in a few seconds. The Commanding officer Cmdr Seymour Dunlop Owens was killed along with 22 of his ship mates, 57 were wounded. The navy made a RKO film called This is America - Navy Yard. It was about the Norman Scott's battle damage repair at Mare Island. The Norman Scott was one of the ships of the destroyer squadron of Desron 54. The destroyers from Desron 54 opened up the battle of Surigao Strait. The destroyer's of Desron 54 sank the Japanese battle ship Fuso and sank two destroyers. The Norman Scott was on the way to that battle after her repair. Later in the war Desron 54 went in with Halsey's three battle ships to bomb the Japanese homeland - the seaport city of Muroran on July 15, 1945.
