History

During the Japanese evacuation from Guadalcanal, USS De Haven (Cdr. Charles Edward Tolman, USN) was attacked by 6 Japanese planes. 3 of them were shot down but the remaining three dropped their bombs and fled. The result destroyed the bridge, killing the captain. A fourth bomb split the hull plates and the De Haven upended and sank in position 09º09'S, 159º52'E with 167 of her men out of a crew of 299. Today, she lies in Iron Bottom Sound.
