History

USS Samuel B. Roberts (Lt.Cdr. Robert Witcher Copeland, USNR) was sunk by gunfire from Japanese warships during the Battle of Samar Island in position 11º40'N, 126º20'E. 89 of her crew were killed and 135 survived though all were wounded which includes the Commanding Officer. The survivors were rescued by the USS LCI's 74/337/340/341; PC's 623/1119 which rescued all the other survivors from the USS Hoel and USS Johnston as well.
