HMS Tetrarch (Lt.Cdr. R.G. Mills, RN) was to depart Greenock for Portsmouth escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). But the sailing has to be postponed as Tetrarch developed problems with her after hydroplanes. (7)

Around 0855A/14, HMS Tigris (Lt.Cdr. H.F. Bone, RN), arrived at Falmouth. She departed Falmouth around 1800A/14 for Holy Loch escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). (8)

Around 1710A/16, HMS Tribune (Lt. E.F. Balston, RN) departed from Holy Loch for her 9th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in the Bay of Biscay.

She first proceeded to Rothesay where she arrived around 1940A/16 and then departed again around 2300A/16.

Passage south through the Irish Sea was made together with HMS Cachalot (Lt.Cdr. J.D. Luce, RN) and HMS Utmost (Lt. J.H. Eaden, DSC, RN). They were escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN).

They all parted company around 0540A/19 west of the Scilly Islands.

Passage south through the Irish Sea was made togeter with HMS Trident (Lt.Cdr. G.M. Sladen, RN). They were escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). They parted company around 2215A/30 near Bishop Rock. (8)

With repairs to her Starboard engine completed HMS Tigris (Lt.Cdr. H.F. Bone, RN) departed from Milford Haven around 1515A/8 to resume her patrol. About half an hour later HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) joined. They parted company around 0715A/9 to the north-west of the Scilly Isles. (8)

Around 0845A/13, HMS Taku (Lt. J.F.B. Brown, RN) departed from Holy Loch for her 9th war patrol. She is to patrol in the Bay of Biscay off Brest and Lorient. During her passage south through the Irish Sea she was escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) until midnight during the night of 14/15 January when they parted company near Wolf Rock. At 1300 hours HMS Cachalot (Cdr. J.D. Luce, DSO, RN) made rendez-vous off Yell Sound, Shetland Islands with her escort HMS Wastwater (T/Lt. A.C. Munro, RNVR). They then proceeded towards Holy Loch. At 0900/29 HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) took over the escort. (10)

During 3 and 4 February 1941, HrMs O 9 (Lt. H.A.W. Goossens, RNN), conducted exercises in Inchmarnock Water. These included night exercises. Several practice attacks were made on HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). (19)

HMS Cachalot (Cdr. J.D. Luce, DSO, RN) departed Holy Loch for her 9th war patrol. She was ordered to lay a minefield off Norway. The position was to be signalled later.

She was escorted north by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) until 1200/7 when HMS Stella Pegasi (T/Lt. E. Steedman, RNR) took over the escort until 0200/8.

HMS Talisman (Lt. M. Willmott, RN) and HMS Torbay (Lt.Cdr. A.C.C. Miers, RN) departed from Holy Loch for Halifax, Canada. They were escorted out by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) until around 2030A/7 when they parted company in position 57°57'N, 10°59'W.

En-route Talisman was ordered to several patrol positions to hunt the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau who are operating against Allied sipping in the North-Atlantic.

Arpund 0245B/19, HMS Trident (Lt.Cdr. G.M. Sladen, DSC, RN), met HMS Tuna (Lt.Cdr. M.K. Cavenagh-Mainwaring, DSO, RN) 6 nautical miles to the south of the rendezvous with the escort, HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN).

Both submarines subsequently made rendezvous with HMS Cutty Sark around 0420B/19 and then set course through the Irish Sea to Holy Loch.

HMS Tuna later lost contact in thick fog and only rejoined around 0500B/20. (14)

At 0830 hours (zone -1), HMS Rorqual (Lt. L.W. Napier, RN) made rendez-vous with HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) off Wolf Rock. Cutty Sark was however unable to proceed northwards owning to the weather conditions. It was decided that Rorqual would proceed alone and that Cutty Sark would catch up later which was done at 1730 hours near Trevose Head. (31)

HMS P 511 (Lt. B.G. Heslop, DSC, RN) failed to arrive at her rendez-vous with HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). P 511 was uncertain of her position as it had not been possible to take sights for several days in the heavy weather. (20)

At 1845 hours (zone -1), HMS P 511 (Lt. B.G. Heslop, DSC, RN), reported her position. She was ordered to make rendez-vous with HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) at 0900/3 off Skerrymore. They were to proceed to Londonderry if fuel did not permit passage to the Clyde. (20)

She departed later the same day for her 4th war patrol. She was ordered to patrol in the Bay of Biscay. Passage through the Irish Sea was made together with the HMS Oberon (Lt.Cdr. P.J.H. Bartlett, RN) and HMS H 50 (Lt. E.T. Stanley, RN). They were escorted by HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN). (32)

At 1319 hours HMS Unbeaten (Lt. D.E.O. Watson, DSC, RN) was ordered to report her position as it is feared she might have been attacked by friendly aircraft (an RAF Wellington of No. 172 Squadron, Coastal Command). She did not respond and failed the show up the next day at her rendez-vous position of Bishops Rock (with HMS Cutty Sark (Cdr.(Retd.) R.H. Mack, RN) and HMS Thunderbolt (Lt.Cdr. C.B. Crouch, DSO and Bar, RN). The report of the friendly aircraft attack was unfortunately correct and resulted in the loss of HMS Unbeaten. There were no survivors.
