12 Sep 1941
After the Danish government-in-exile requested that the United States protect Greenland, the Northland (Cmdr. C.C. von Paulsen, USCG) captured the Norwegian (being used by the Nazis) trawler Buskoe along with 27 men aboard. The Buskoe had disembarked members of a team to set up radio beacons. Later, three more men were captured. (U.S. Coast Guard). (1)
29 Nov 1942
USCGC Northland lost its Grumman J2F-4 Duck amphibian plane while rescuing the survivors of a crashed US Army Air Force B-17 in Greenland. The pilot, Lt. J. A. Pritchard, USCG, crewmember RM1 B. A. Bottoms, USCG, and survivor Cpl. L. E. Howarth, USAAF, were all killed. The two Coast Guardsmen were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
