During the Allied landings in North Africa, the Italian submarine Platino (Lt. Rigoli) approached Bougie Roads and at 0326 hours torpedoed the British troopship Narkunda (16632 GRT) in position 36°52'N, 05°01'E. The ship remained afloat but was sunk the following day in an air attack.
30 Jan 1943
While escorting convoy TE-14, the British corvette HMS Samphire (Lt.Cdr. Frederick Thomas Renny, DSC, RNR) was torpedoed and sunk off Bougie, Algeria, in position 36°56'N, 05°40'E, by the Italian submarine Platino (Lt.Cdr. Patrelli Campagnano).
In Bougie Roads (Algeria), Platino fired a 4-torpedo spread at 2 units identified as destroyers. Detonations were recorded after runs of 54", 68" and 85" and the CO, accordingly, claimed hits on 2 destroyers and one transport, but the only ship hit, according to Allied records, was the corvette Samphire, which took 2 hits and sank.

At 2327 hours, the British auxiliary minesweeping trawler HMS Tervani (Lt.Skipper Frederick George Blockwell, RNR) was sunk off Cape Bougaroni, Algeria in position 37°22'N, 06°14'E by the Italian submarine Platino (Lt.Cdr. Patrelli Campagnano).
