History | Following Italy's declaration of war on Germany, Giada was modified for use as ASW target by the British Eastern Fleet. In 4/1944 she arrived Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and spent the next 6 months there training ASW units. Returned to Taranto in October 1944 and remained inactive until the end of the war. Postwar she received the designation V.2 and in 1948 was converted to a battery-charging hulk but in 1952-53 she was taken in hand and converted into a Guppy type. She recieved a new sail, the stern tubes were removed and all protrusions eliminated from the casing. She also received new, longer, periscopes and a US made radar. Her main employment was the training of Italian ASW forces, in which role she served until stricken in 1966. |
