Notable events involving Marea include:
3 Nov 1943
Marea (SubLt Attilio Russo) sailed from Brindisi carrying the Chief of the Italian Navy Intelligence Division, Lcdr Raoul Galletti and 6 "civilian personnel" constituting 2 "cells".
At 2335/5 November, Marea approached Cortellazzo Lighthouse, in the vicinity of the mouth of the Piave river, north of Venezia. The lighthouse, the keeper probably having heard the noise from the sub's diesels, switched the beacon on and allowed the sub to make perfect landfall. She grounded gently in 6 m (20') of water, 1? miles SW of the lighthouse. The sea state, however, convinced the passengers it would be impossible to reach the coast, the boat then moved to deeper water and sat on the bottom until 1830/6.
Onsurfacing, a plane overflew her & she went deep until 2030 hrs but, on resurfacing another aircraft passed directly overhead. Considering the mission compromised, the Intelligence Chief decided to land the passengers farther south, so an area near Cattolica was selected and the disembarkation executed without further problems. Marea returned to Brindisi @ 0645 of 9 November
23 Dec 1943
Marea sailed again from Brindisi at 0800 hrs of 23 December and landed civilian passengers somewhere on the coast of German-controlled Italy. The records of this operation have not survived, the sub was back in Brindisi @ 0824/29 December.
