History | At 0223 hrs on 15 November 1944 the Italian submarine Luigi Settembrini was mistakenly rammed and sunk by her escort, the US destroyer escort USS Frament, in the North Atlantic some 685 miles west of Gibraltar in position 36º11'N, 19º45'W. Luigi Settembrini was on passage to Bermuda to aid in ASW training. 42 of the crew were killed and 14 survivors were rescued by USS Frament. |
