Notable events involving Maranhao include:


During the First World War she served with the Royal Navy and took part in the Battle of Jutland. On 23 February 1920 she was given back unarmed to the shipyard Thornycroft who sold her to a civilian company in Brazil, after some time she was sold to the Brazilian Navy and was commissioned on 9 December 1922. In 1942 3 20mm AA Oerlikons, improved ASW equipment and a sonar device were installed. In 1946 she was decommissioned with 89.510 miles running during her time in active duty. (1)

Maranhao picks up 86 survivors from the American merchant African Star that was torpedoed and sunk the day before by German U-boat U-172 south-east of Rio de Janeiro in position 25°46'S, 40°35'W.
