History | Built as destroyer escort USS Oswald (DE 71) of the Buckley class for the US Navy. On 17 Sep 1943, commissioned as HMS Affleck (K 362) in the Royal Navy and served in the 1st Escort Group.
Notes on event | At 14.14 hours on 26 Dec 1944, U-486 fired three Gnats at the 1st Escort Group on patrol off Cherbourg and observed hits after 1 minute 39 seconds and 1 minute 41 seconds and heard a third detonation after 7 minutes. Meyer claimed two destroyers sunk and a corvette damaged. In fact, the frigates HMS Affleck (K 462) (Cdr C. Gwinner, DSO and Bar, DSC, RN (retired)) and HMS Capel (K 470) (Lt B.G. Heslop, DSC, RN) were hit. The latter sank and the other was towed to port, but declared a total loss. After the war HMS Affleck (K 462) was returned to the US Navy in Britain, where she was sold to Transcontinental Victory Commercial Co Ltd on 24 Jan 1947 and converted at Hoboken to the electric power barge Nuestra SeƱora de la Luz in 1949. The barge served in various Spanish ports until September 1962 when she was towed by the Spanish tug RA-3 to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands. In 1973 she was moved to Lanzarote until 1981 and then probably broken up at Cadiz.
